A short online news article about the first "Walk/Don't Walk" sign caught my eye this week. The date of installation seemed fairly recent and surprising, so I did some searching.
A researcher at the Federal Highway Administration discovered the beginning timeframe of the walk/don't walk sign to be between 1938-1940, but not the location of the first sign. Check out the origin of pedestrian safety and the pedestrian scramble.

A lot of Ground
According to the Dubuque Telegraph Herald, Western Dubuque Community School District:
- covers 555 square miles (half the land area of Rhode Island)
- transports students to 20 different schools
- more than 21% of students live on gravel roads
